Stuff I Like on October 19, 2013

  • Having an unexpected day off with my husband Jeff who normally works Saturdays but miraculously got yesterday off!
  • Seaport Village
  • Breakfast at the appropriately named Edgewater Grill.
  • Seeing a plethora of people making their dogs walk in a suicide prevention walkathon. To the best of my knowledge, dogs are not suicidal.
  • Knowing that the Kite Store still exists.
  • The infinite mystery of maneuvering downtown San Diego's one way streets.
  • Upstart Crow - if there is a better bookstore on the planet, I have not found it. Except possibly Shakespeare and Company in Paris because... after all, it's in Paris.
  • The smell of gas and boat exhaust and water that filled my mind with a million home movies of me and Daddy in boats together. Fishing. Trying to learn to water ski in Canada. Skipping across the water in a speedboat. Scenes from my childhood suddenly emerged with one whiff of boat exhaust.
  • Hearing Frank Sinatra sing "Fly Me To The Moon" in the cupcake shop while I ate my fruit tart and drank my iced dirty chai.
  • Brushing past a man who smelled of cigars and thinking about my cousin Earl.
  • Finding a giraffe figurine to photograph for my friend Sandra because....we had a giraffe incident once.
  • That my neighborhood played Hotel Transylvania for free on a giant drive in movie screen at the park across the street and my neighbors took blankets and chairs and sat under the stars and watched it together. Not to mention free popcorn!
  • The "Under the Mistletoe" Christmas Store. I know it's technically to early, but - if I were rich and could get away with being eccentric, I'd keep a tree up year round.
